When you've been told “not enough bone”

It's the most common thing we hear from new patients, including many from Des Plaines. Years of missing teeth, gum disease or a denture can shrink the jawbone, and many offices then recommend months of bone grafting, or say implants aren't possible. Dr. Advani's practice focuses on these cases. Options include:

  • Pterygoid implants, anchored in dense bone behind the upper molars.
  • Trans-sinus and palatal-approach implants, which reach solid bone without a separate sinus-lift surgery.
  • Zygomatic implants, anchored in the cheekbone for the most severe upper-jaw bone loss.

In many of these cases, fixed temporary teeth can still be attached the same day. See implants with severe bone loss.

Planned in 3D, placed with navigation

Implants placed near the sinuses and nerves leave no room for guesswork. Every case is planned in both Blue Sky Plan and X-Guide from a 3D CT scan, and placed with X-Nav navigation that tracks each step of the surgery live in 3D. Surgery is done under IV sedation in our office on the Ascension Alexian Brothers Medical Center campus.

Common questions

Can I get implants without bone grafting?

Often, yes. Pterygoid, trans-sinus, palatal-approach and zygomatic implants use dense bone in other areas of the jaw. Grafting is still the better choice for some patients, and a 3D CT scan at your consultation shows which applies to you.

Do zygomatic implants cost more?

Zygomatic implants are an add-on of $6,000 per arch. Pterygoid and other advanced anchorage techniques are included in full-arch pricing, which starts at $16,875 per arch with a zirconia bridge.
