Every patient receives written instructions specific to their surgery. This guide describes a typical full-arch recovery; always follow the instructions from your own surgical team.
Surgery day
Under IV sedation, any remaining teeth are removed, implants are placed, and a fixed temporary bridge is attached. Most patients remember little of the procedure. You will need an adult to drive you home or to your hotel, and to stay with you for the rest of the day. Expect numbness, some oozing, and drowsiness from sedation.
Days 1–3
- Swelling usually peaks around day two or three, then starts to go down. Bruising on the cheeks or neck is common and fades over a week or two.
- Use ice as directed, keep your head elevated, and take medications as prescribed.
- Stick to liquids and very soft foods: smoothies, soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, eggs.
- Rest. Most patients take a few days off work.
Days 4–14
- Soreness and swelling steadily improve. Many people return to desk work within the first week.
- Keep the area clean exactly as instructed. A post-operative visit checks healing and your bite.
Weeks 2 through month 3: the soft-food period
This is when the implants fuse with the bone (osseointegration). Your temporary bridge looks and works like teeth, but it is not built for hard chewing. Hard or crunchy foods can overload healing implants or crack the temporary.
| Generally OK | Avoid until cleared |
|---|---|
| Pasta, rice, soft fish, eggs | Nuts, popcorn, hard candy |
| Cooked vegetables, soft bread | Raw carrots, crusty bread, apples (unless cut small) |
| Ground meat, tender chicken | Steak, jerky, ribs |
Months 3–4: your final bridge
Once the implants have healed, we capture their exact positions with a digital scan and photogrammetry, try in the design, and deliver your final bridge. At Advani Implant Institute, final bridges are zirconia or NanoCeramic, designed in-office and milled on our in-house mill. Compare bridge materials →
Long-term care
- Professional cleanings every 6 months (required to keep your warranty active).
- Daily cleaning under the bridge; a water flosser helps.
- A nightguard if you grind or clench.
- No tobacco. Smoking raises the risk of implant problems and voids our warranty.
When to call us
Call right away for heavy bleeding that won't stop with pressure, fever, swelling that gets worse after day three, a loose bridge, or pain that isn't controlled by your medication. Active surgical patients receive after-hours contact information.

Common questions
How long does it take to recover from full mouth dental implants?
Most patients return to light activity and desk work within a few days to a week. The implants take about 3–4 months to heal fully, during which you follow a soft-food diet before your final bridge is placed.
How painful is recovery?
Most patients describe soreness and swelling rather than severe pain, worst in the first two to three days and managed with prescribed medication and ice.
When can I eat normally?
After your final bridge is placed, usually around 3–4 months after surgery. Until then, stick to soft foods so the implants can heal.
